Publishing Your Visio Drawings Online

Microsoft Visio has limitations on publishing your drawings.  This page shows some of the forum discussions found on Google.com about publishing your drawings online (as Web pages).

A brief description on what Easy Publish can help is available at the end of each discussion.

Smiley_03.gif (675 bytes) Easy Publish Tips

  1. Easy Publish converts all the hyperlinks according to the Web standard regardless the input format (for example: absolute vs. relative paths, backslashes vs. forward slashes) and ensures that your hyperlinks work without you fixing anything.

  2. Easy Publish takes away bookmarks associated with a document (such as one for a Word document) to ensure that your hyperlinks work in browsers.

  3. Easy Publish goes one step ahead to convert links to Visio drawings into links to Web pages for you to easily publish multiple drawings.

Well, there are 2 pieces to this. The first is setting up your hyperlinks
correctly
in Visio so they'll export the way you want. You found the KB
article
I was going to mention. Have you performed one of the workarounds
mentioned in that article
? If not, just put a space into the Base Hyperlink
field in the File >> Properties dialog.

The 2nd thing is that the html pages created by Visio do not pay any
attention to the parameters you pass in
. You'll have to write some script to
put inside the main html file that you create when you do a Save as Web Page
from Visio.

Smiley_03.gif (675 bytes) Easy Publish Tip:  Easy Publish can help you:

  1. You can link to a page (page 5 in the above example) from anywhere - such as a Web page of your own.

  2. There is no frame, nor the need for coding.  Straight-forward Web pages are all you get with information ready to present to your users.

Smiley_03.gif (675 bytes) Easy Publish Tip: Backslash is the Windows format.  Therefore you will encounter support issues for Netscape and Unix.   Click here to see how Easy Publish can take hyperlinks away from your concern list.

Pirjo,

For the linked documents issue, one way to handle it is to give each shape
that you want linked to another document 2 hyperlinks. One for the vsd file
(like you currently are using), and another with the relative path to the
exported html file for the document.

Hope this helps.

Smiley_03.gif (675 bytes) Easy Publish Tips:

  1. Creating 2 links is time-consuming, error-prone (because you can test one of them only), and confusing for your users (because one of them is broken).

  2. With Easy Publish, you simply choose "Link to Visio Drawings as Web Pages" on this tab and all the links will be automatically converted.

* * * Showing Custom Properties

Unfortunately, no, you can't specify that you'd like to use a click to show
the properties rather than the mouse over. You can modify the files so that
it acts the way you want, but there's no way to specify that within Visio.

Smiley_03.gif (675 bytes) Easy Publish Tips:

  1. Your drawing is published with 100% zoom and as high-quality PNG files
  2. You can choose to have a print-only page for high-quality printing

Hi Angela,

To set the style in Visio 2002 you can go to the \program files\microsoft
office\visio10\1033\solutions\visio extras\ (default)
directory and edit the
default.css file. Please keep in mind that this change will affect all
drawings saved to HTML by Visio, i.e. it has global effect.

The other option, as you referred to, is to make copies of the default.css
file for your custom styles and then overwrite the output css with hers.
Since you would have to do this for each export, it may not be useful over
the long run.

The ability to choose a custom stylesheet from the UI is a feature which is
under consideration for a future version of Visio. thanks.

* * * Visio into HTML

HELLLLLLLLLLLLP

I'm converting visio 2000 (clickable) flowcharts into HTML (by "file, save as,
HTML). It is automatically adding the image into the upper part of a frame. It
adds a navigation bar to the lower part of the frame.

I need to convert to HTML without any frames. How can I stop this from happening
automatically
?

Smiley_03.gif (675 bytes) Easy Publish Tip: We fully understand the concerns about using frames.  Easy Publish, therefore, generates Web pages without any frames.  Click here to see a demo.

* * * Using Visio HTML output within frames

Does anyone know how to take the output from the Visio html export
filter, and use it within a frame of another document?

Essentially, I want to put the frame based html from Visio into a frame
of another document.

The links only seems to work properly if the links open up a new
window. If they open up in the current window, nothing happens when
clicking the link.

I can take the image map document (drawing_raster.htm), and modify it
so it is stand alone html, but I will be doing this on a regular basis,
and it is not practical in the long run.

I have tried adding a <base target> tag to drawing_raster.htm, but it
makes no difference.

It seems the javascript that Visio generates prevents this from working
the way I would like it to.

Smiley_03.gif (675 bytes) Easy Publish Tip: Easy Publish supports both Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator on all the platforms (Windows and Unix for example) without you doing anything.

* * * Visio html upload to different hosting!

I created a visio web page (save as webpage) but when i
upload to different hosting, one worked and the other
don't...the image failed to show in a unix-hosting and
works well in windows-hosting.

For confirmation, I've tried on two unix-based server..
but it still didn't work.. but when i try on one of the
free hosting which is windows-based hosting... it works
well.

I suspect that this could be due to the platform or
hosting services that i'm using...

Any idea anyone?

Smiley_03.gif (675 bytes) Easy Publish Tip: There are known issues on Unix support for the Web pages generated by Visio.

Easy Publish ensures that you drawing works on both Windows and Unix platforms.   The hyperlinks are all converted according to the Web standard and have been extensively tested on Unix servers.  Please click here for details.
