Web_-_Button_Pin_Blue.gif (675 bytes) OLE (Object Linking and Embedding): The technology to link to or embed one type of document (such as a Visio drawing) in another type (such as a Word document).  The benefits: 1) To show different types of documents as one; 2)  For a linked object, to automatically update the display when the source document has changed.

A linked file stays as an independent file.  Modifications to the linked file will be automatically picked up by the destination document.

An embedded file, on the other hand, becomes part of the destination document.  You have to manually delete it and put in a new one or edit the embedded file directly to update it.
