Tutorial for Amazing Visio - Easy Link
2. Working with Hyperlinks

This tutorial shows you how to create hyperlinks, in particular:

  1. Links to other files, such as a Word document or a Web page
  2. Links to other shapes or drawing pages

  1. Ensure that you have gone through  tutorial one to show this window:

  2. Click the Add button, this window shows:

  3. Click the Browse button.  Choose file folder c:\My Tutorial and then file Tutorial_EasyLink_Picture.PNG.  Click the Open button.

  4. Click the Test button, the picture shows in your browser.

  5. Type "My Picture" into the Description field.  Click the OK button.

  6. The main window now shows as:

  7. Click the Show button, the picture shows in your browser again.

  8. Choose Show File Link on This Window and then click the Show button.   The picture shows under the File tab.
    Tip: Instead of click the Show button, you can double click the row to show the picture.

  1. Click the Add button again and then click the Browse button.  Choose file c:\My Tutorial\Tutorial_EasyLink_Excel.xls.

  2. Click the Refresh button to load the worksheet names from the spreadsheet.  Choose Custom Styles from the Sheet list.  Type "c2" into the Cell field.  Click the Test button.  The spreadsheet is displayed with a graph at cell c2 on worksheet Custom Styles.

  3. Type My Spreadsheet into the Description field.

  4. Choose Default to set this hyperlink as the default.  Click the OK button.  A new row is added to the list with bold text.  Double click the row to show the spreadsheet under the File tab.

Double click each newly added row to test.  Note that the PowerPoint slides will start from slide one when running under the File tab.  It shows slide 3 when opened separately under the edit mode (if you uncheck Show File Link on This Window). 

Tip: You may click the Remove button to remove the display from the File tab.

You can create a hyperlink from one Item (such as a shape) to another either in the same drawing, or a different drawing.  In Easy Link, this is called Item Link (compared with File Link that links to a file).

  1. Click the Close button of the main window.

  2. Click your right mouse button on the following shape and then choose menu Define Item Link.  This tells Easy Link that you want to define a link starting from this Item.

  3. The following message shows.  Click the OK button.  Note that this message shows only once till you restart Visio.

  4. Go to Visio.  Click page tab Flowchart Overview.

  5. Click your right mouse button on shape Begin and choose menu Define Item Link again.  This tells Easy Link that you want to link the first Item to this Item.

  6. The main window shows with two hyperlinks created to link the two items back and forth.  The window title "#Rounded rectangle" shows that the Current Item is the second Item you have clicked.

  7. Click button Edit and change the Description to "From Process Overview to Flowchart Overview".

  8. Choose the second row.  Click button Edit and change the Description to "From Flowchart Overview to Process Overview".

  9. View the Results:

    1. Choose Hide Me to Show.  Click the Go To button.  This tells Easy Link to use this link as a bookmark to show the Item. The Easy Link window is closed and the first Item "Make Decision" is displayed in Visio.

    2. Click your right mouse button on the first Item and then choose menu Amazing Visio - Easy Link to show the main window.  Choose row From Process Overview to Flowchart Overview and  then click the Go To button.  The second Item "Begin" is displayed.

Easy Link has added unique IDs to the Items used to built hyperlinks.  Therefore save your drawing to save these IDs.

  1. You may try to define hyperlinks to online Web pages.  Use your browser to view a page, such as this help page and then copy the link and paste it into the File or URL field.

  2. You may also try to define links to other files outside of your Registry folder c:\My Tutorial.  Click the Import button to import the file into the Registry.

  3. Or go to the next tutorial to create bookmarks.
